What is immunization

In my profession, one of the things we do is to do immunization to the children. This is a picture of us doing immunization. It is not easy for us because we don’t want to hurt them but we just think of the benefits it gives to them. What is immunization?

When the human immune system is exposed to molecules that are foreign to the body (non-self), it will orchestrate an immune response, but it can also develop the ability to quickly respond to a subsequent encounter (through immunological memory). This is a function of the adaptive immune system. Therefore, by exposing an individual to an immunogen in a controlled way, their body can learn to protect itself: this is called active immunisation.

The most important elements of the immune system that are improved by immunisation are the B cells (and the antibodies they produce) and T cells. Memory B cell and memory T cells are responsible for a swift response to a second encounter with a foreign molecule. Passive immunization is when these elements are introduced directly into the body, instead of when the body itself has to make these elements.

Immunisation can be done through various techniques, most commonly vaccination. Vaccines against microorganisms that cause diseases can prepare the body’s immune system, thus helping to fight or prevent an infection. The fact that mutations can cause cancer cells to produce proteins or other molecules that are unknown to the body forms the theoretical basis for therapeutic cancer vaccines. Other molecules can be used for immunisation as well, for example in experimental vaccines against nicotine (NicVAX) or the hormone ghrelin (in experiments to create an obesity vaccine).

Immunisation can be achieved in an active or passive fashion: vaccination is an active form of immunization.

Active immunization
Active immunisation entails the introduction of a foreign molecule into the body, which causes the body itself to generate immunity against the target. This immunity comes from the T cells and the B cells with their antibodies.

Active immunization can occur naturally when a person comes in contact with, for example, a microbe. If the person has not yet come into contact with the microbe and has no pre-made antibodies for defense (like in passive immunization), the person can become immunized. The immune system will eventually create antibodies and other defenses against the microbe. The next time, the immune response against this microbe can be very efficient; this is the case in many of the childhood infections that a person only contracts once, but then is immune.

Artificial active immunization is where the microbe, or parts of it, are injected into the person before they are able to take it in naturally. If whole microbes are used, they are pre-treated, so that they will not harm the injected person as the naturally occurring microbe would. Depending on the type of disease, this technique also works with dead microbes, parts of the microbe, or treated toxins from the microbe.

Passive immunization

Passive immunization is where pre-made elements of the immune system are transferred to a person, and the body doesn’t have to create these elements itself. Currently, antibodies can be used for passive immunization. This method of immunization begins to work very quickly, but it is short lasting, because the antibodies are naturally broken down, and if there are no B cells to produce more antibodies, they will disappear.

Passive immunization can be naturally acquired when antibodies are being transferred from mother to fetus during pregnancy, to help protect the fetus before and shortly after birth.

Artificial passive immunization is normally given by injection and is used if there has been a recent outbreak of a particular disease or as an emergency treatment to poisons (for example, for tetanus). The antibodies can be produced in animals or in vitro.

Amazing domestic seafood recipes

I have a little passion on cooking. Just lately, I want to enroll in culinary arts school. It feels so great to cook. It is more satisfying feeling when people like the food that you prepared. I really love seafood even though I have some allergic reaction when I eat them. I like crabs as well as my family. I like it when it is cooked with coconut milk. It is just so easy and quick to prepare. Bring the crabs to boil then add spices. Then add the coconut milk. Then boil it again and serve it hot. It is so yummy and tasty. It is a very simple domestic seafood dish but will give so much fun eating with our loved ones. I consider it as one of the amazing domestic seafood recipes I know. I used to watch “Iron Chef” in the TV. I am so amazed with the chefs. I am looking forward to see the upcoming culinary competition Cook off  to be held at New Orleans Morial Convention Center this Agust 2-3, 2008. Do not miss the event of Great American Seafood Cook-Off. It is great when we support our own domestic seafood that sustains us.

It is so much when you see them laugh at the same time learn from the things they needed to know about pregnancy, fetal growth and development, nutrition, breastfeeding, family planning, labor and delivery and so on.

Natural remedies for allergy

Allergies is a big problem. I am allergic to dust, fumes, and sea foods. It is not easy when the allergy attack. It really need to take my anti-histamine medications because it really disturb me. It made my throat sore. It is good to know that there are natural remedies to get rid of the allergy. I have to try it because I am tired of taking medications for my allergies.

The following is a list of natural remedy tips to reduce the effect of seasonal allergy:

Close the windows at home and in your car.

If you need to cool down, run the air conditioning instead of opening the windows. Also, put the air on “recirculate” so you’re not bringing in outside air filled with pollen.

Put pillows, box springs, and mattresses in cases that keep dust mites out. Wash it. Throw sheets, comforters, blankets, curtains, and washable stuffed animals regularly into the washing machine, set to the hottest water temperature the material can handle.

Use the clothes dryer. Dust mites can’t take the heat.

Keep kitchens and bathrooms clean and dry. If you use a humidifier, clean it regularly so it doesn’t become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

If your kids have dust mite allergies and their toys can’t be washed, put the toys in the freezer for 48 hours every two weeks. Freezing temperatures will kill the dust mites, Duke University’s Williams says.

To further reduce dust mites, consider replacing your carpeting with hard flooring and getting rid of upholstered furniture.

Ask your doctor if your allergies are linked to your pet, and what to do about it.

In the basement or attic, put away collectibles and clothes in plastic storage bags and run a dehumidifier to prevent mold growth.

Acupuncture, part of traditional Chinese medicine, has shown promise in some allergy studies. In acupuncture, very fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body to rebalance what practitioners call chi, or vital energy.

Although there is little research on the use of supplements for hay fever, one herb has undergone clinical testing. One study showed that an extract called butterbur Ze330 worked as well as a prescription antihistamine. It also did not cause sleepiness, which may make it a better option than some over-the-counter allergy remedies.

Researchers have also looked at vitamin C and other supplements, such as urtica dioica, bromelain, quercetin, and N-acetylcysteine, for fighting allergies. At this point, there is little evidence that they work.

Delaying childbirth and caesareans

In my nine years of practice, I observed a lot of older women have prolong labor and ended up having caesarean section. I think it is not just a physical condition that causes them to have long labor but I think psychological aspect plays a vital part of it. It seems that older women who are pregnant for the first time think that they will have a long labor and some think they will have caesarean section. It is already imprinted in their minds. I always tell those women to think and condition there minds that they will have a normal labor and delivery.

Scientists at Cambridge University have found that advancing age is associated with impaired uterine function, specifically a lesser degree of spontaneous contraction and a change in the type of contraction. This is thought to result in poor progression of labour and therefore increase the rate of caesarean section.

Water Works for Weight Loss

There are so many weight loss medications or pills. Many are having hard times losing weights. They are spending a lot of money for it. Everyone should know that weight can be lost without any cost. It will not just for losing weight but for the benefit of the whole body parts. I am hoping that even we have ideal weight we need to increase our water in take.

Nothing quells the appetite like water, lots and lots of water. Start out with two quart bottles in the morning and carry one with you to work or wherever you go. If you like, divvy up the 64 ounces of water into eight (8-ounce) bottles or four pint (16-ounce) bottles to carry around with you all day. Freeze half of them the night before and they will last all day, even in a hot car. Keep some unfrozen so they will be ready to drink immediately.

Yes. You will have to make more frequent bathroom trips, but it is worth it. Drink your 64 ounces of water before dinner, if possible, so you’re not up half the night going to the bathroom.

Water not only fills you up and lessens your appetite, it prevents those “hungry horrors” we all encounter when our blood sugar drops and we reach for cookies, candy, ice cream, fries or other high-calorie treats. Water also flushes out the system, rids the body of bloat and toxins and rosies up the complexion. Now, start splashing.

Quality work boots

I really appreciate men who are hard workers. They are working so hard just to provide for their families. I am sad to say that some of the countries the construction workers or labourers are the ones less compensated. They are working under the heat of the sun. They deserve to be treated well. The construction companies should provide them with all of the safety precautions as what some of construction companies do “safety first” like hard hats and work boots. This is to give them protection from their risky workplace. Work boots will not only protect them but it gives them comfort.

Photo hunt: hanging

p1000191.JPG
This was taken during our ropes course outing. I was the one climbing the pole. It was a game, a team who can shot the ball in the ring posted on the top of the pole first the one won. We won! I used to climb banana trees when I was still a chile. I did not know how did I do it. My team was holding on the pole in order for me to climb. It was really a team work. The pole was not implanted on the ground. It was the effort of my team mates that made the pole standing without shaking while I was climbing. It was so much fun.
