Put motherhood on ice
With the new invention, it is possible now to freeze egg cells.
South African women now have the option to freeze their eggs (ova) for as long as they like, for later use. In the past, it was only possible to freeze sperm and embryos. This is useful for women who are single at the age of 30.
It is also useful for those whose ovaries may need to be removed , or could be damaged by cancer, as it allows them to become pregnant at a later stage. Eggs are frozen within an hour of being collected. The procedure costs R10 000 - R15 000.
